Dental Crowns

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap fitted over a damaged or discoloured tooth to rebuild its strength, shape and appearance. Once fitted, it covers the whole visible tooth above the gumline, so it works for problems too big for a filling to fix, while keeping the healthy root and structure underneath intact. It’s one of the most reliable ways to protect a weakened tooth from further damage and save it from extraction, restoring full function without anyone noticing the difference from your natural teeth.

When do you need a crown?

  • The tooth is severely damaged, worn down or discoloured
  • The tooth needs extra strength after root canal treatment
  • You want to cover and protect a dental implant

Choosing your crown material

We offer three options, each suited to different needs. You’ll see and approve the shape and shade before the crown is made.

Zirconium

The strongest option and fully metal-free, so no grey line at the gum, ever. Handles heavy chewing well, making it a solid choice for back teeth, and modern zirconium can also look natural enough for front teeth. Good pick if you grind your teeth or have a metal allergy.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal

Very durable and resistant to chipping, suitable for front or back teeth. The trade-off: the metal base underneath can show as a dark line at the gum over time, especially if your gums recede.

Full porcelain

The most natural-looking option, best suited to front teeth where appearance matters most. Not as hard-wearing as zirconium or porcelain-fused-to-metal, but a strong choice if you have a metal allergy or want the most lifelike result.

Caring for your crown

A crown protects the tooth underneath, but it still needs looking after. Brush and floss around it as normal, avoid biting down on very hard foods like ice or hard sweets, and if you grind your teeth at night, a nightguard will help it last. With good care, a crown can last many years, though how long depends on the material and how well it’s looked after.
